Youth Theatre

Droichead Youth Theatre has been central to the theatrical life in Drogheda. The Youth Theatre serves multiple purposes, in addition to drama training there are social, educational and personal development aspects to Youth Theatre. Youth Theatre introduces young people to the arts and creativity in ways commercial drama academies can never do. The ethos is collective. Youth Theatre not only stimulates an early love and appreciation for the arts, it encourages mutual respect, intellectual questioning and active citizenship. It is a living proven platform for creativity as a staple in the life of ordinary citizens in ordinary towns.

The Youth Theatre meets every Saturday morning between 11am and 2pm in Droichead Arts Centre. It is aimed at 14-18 year olds. Each year one show is produced in May.

History

Droichead Youth Theatre was established in 1992 founded by Declan Mallon and Aileen Hanratty. The fact that Drogheda hosts two professional theatre companies is attributable in no small measure to the quality and consistency to the youth theatre as a formation platform for talent. Throughout its history Droichead Youth Theatre has put on shows, both scripted and devised. In 2002, as a joint venture with Upstate Theatre company, members from the Youth Theatre and young people from the Mosney Accommodation Centre for Asylum Seekers devised a very successful show called ‘Steps’. The current Artistic Director since 1998 is Sharon Cromwell, who came from a professional background in improvisation and devised theatre.

What’s all the drama about?

Following on from the success of their production MOCK during Drogheda Arts Festival this year, Droichead Youth Theatre is recruiting new members for its summer introductory programme. This workshop programme will give you a chance to see if the youth theatre is really for you!

Drama workshops will be held every Saturday beginning on the  10th July for a 10 week period.  The emphasis is on having fun, exploring creativity and learning about drama in a safe and supportive environment.   No previous experience is necessary. This introductory programme will give members a taste of what’s in store when the formal youth theatre schedule resumes in September.

Droichead Youth Theatre is now in its 19th year.  There are twenty members led by Artistic Director Niall Cleary under the auspices of Droichead Arts Centre.  The summer workshops will be led by guest facilitator Gavin Logue.  If you are between the ages of 14 and 18 and interesting in joining, we would love to hear from you! Our 10 week introductory programme costs €50.
